Radbourn's immortal season August 20, 1884: Rad plays shortstop!

(A daily diary of the greatest season a major-league pitcher ever had.)

PROVIDENCE, R.I — After starting the Providence Grays’ last six straight official games, Old Hoss Radbourn finally gets a break from pitching — though not from playing.

Manager Frank Bancroft wants to keep the Hoss in the lineup in case he is needed in relief (once a game starts only the original nine players are allowed to play, barring injury). So he sends his ace out to play shortstop!

The Grays beat the hapless Detroit Wolverines, 5-2. The defending champion Boston Beaneaters keep pace (4½ games back in the National League standings) by beating the Chicago White Stockings, 7-4.

RADBOURN’S RECORD: 35-9
